IB-01 A Superior! Fanfare (Level 3) $56.50 [PDF score] ![]()
a fanfare melody with bits and pieces of Canadian and American anthems, originally composed for official opening of the first Bi-Annual Environmental Youth Symposium on the Lake Superior Basin in 1995 and performed at virtually every symposium to date (Wisconsin, Ontario, Minnesota, Michigan) (approx 2 min.)
IB-02 A Superior! Suite
a four-part historical suite of the Lake Superior region (Note: Lake Superior is the world’s largest freshwater lake by area, “Lake Keweenaw” is about the area 12,500 years ago when it was a huge ice sheet. “Anishinaabe Welcome” refers to our First Nations people, based on an honour song from the Duluth, Minnesota area. “Ahh! Les Voyageurs!” begins with recorders and wooden spoons and ends similarly, with the band working a happy tune as a round that may have been sung by a weary voyageur while paddling a Montreal canoe on the greatest of lakes. “Superior!” reflects the incredible power and majesty of the lake that contains 10% of the world’s fresh water, referred to many as the “Inland Sea”. (14-15 min.)
IB-03 Lake Keweenaw
performed without band instruments (special natural instruments must be harvested well in advance). Played in absolute darkness with short explanation and warning to audience prior to its start. The most haunting movement which resulted in several complimentary letters to the editor of the Sault Star newspaper when performed at a "Friends of Superior" presentation sponsored by the local Sault Star. (approx. 3:30)
IB-04 Anishinaabe Welcome
based on an “honour song” heard at the 1995 IJC Public Forum at DECC, Duluth, Minnesota from the Anishnabek of the region, strictly adhering to Anishnabek traditions regarding respect and accurate performance techniques for the grandfather drum. A flexible piece that can work on its own or with a qualified Anishnabek dancer. (approx. 3:00-3:20)
IB-05 Ahh! Les Voyageurs!
an original round first played by recorders with wooden spoons providing rhythmic background, shared by band instruments with a brief humorous episode, ending as it began with recorders and spoons. (approx. 3:10)
IB-06 Superior! (Level 3) $68.50 [PDF score]
a powerful theme followed by surprising calm to depict the world's largest freshwater lake in a state of full fury and startling serenity, ending with a massive crescendo, aspiring to pristine
conditions in the future, of the deepest and largest of the Great Lakes. (approx. 5:00)
